What Britain Lost

About

About What Britain Lost

What Britain Lost is a documentary series and podcast about the everyday things, places, brands and ways of life that vanished from British life: Concorde, the seaside pier, Woolworths, the corner shop. Each episode tells one story in about 25 minutes: how it began, what it felt like, and why it went.

How an episode is made

Each film follows the same six chapters: the last day, the promise behind it, the people who built or ran it, its golden age, the turn, and what remains today, with where you can still go and see it.

The narration is written to be listened to. The pictures are real wherever they can be: archive photographs and film from Wikimedia Commons, Flickr and similar openly licensed collections, every one credited on its episode page. Maps, timelines and title cards are drawn for the series.

Where AI is used, and where it isn't

Some short atmospheric shots (a rooftop, a crowd seen from behind, rain on a window) are AI-generated recreations, used for mood and never presented as archive or evidence. Every episode says so in its description.

Quotes credited to Tom Jones (not that one) are imagined, a gentle running joke for an ordinary voice. They are never real interviews and never carry facts.
